In search for better batteries
In search for better batteries with long lasting and smaller and easy to use, many researchers and companies are inventing new innovative Ideas. Nowadays, batteries are gaining in importance with everything shifting towards mobile computing and sadly, they have been found wanting -desperately. A group based at Saint Louis University, Missouri,USA comes up with the sugar battery. It is still a fuel cell, but the fuel is anything that contains sugar, even soft drinks. If it catches on, we would be sharing our coke with laptops and mobile! They last really very long , about 4 times longer than the normal lithium- based batteries. Moreover it is easy to recharge and are biodegradable. Again some researchers in MIT are investigating the use of capacitors as batteries. We know that capacitors are easy to recharge because of their induction property. But the problem with it is the its short time for charge holding capacity. If the electrodes are covered with carbon nanotubes, the surface area would be greatly increased and so is the charge holding capacity. The researchers say that it would come to commercial in 5 years time. Another completely different field of studies taking place is charging by induction. It means we would never hook up in a power source, instead we would be merely placing it in the vicinity of an induction charger. All we have to do to charge the battery is to place the mobile or laptop on the charging pad. research is going on to see if it can be researched from a longer distance. In the near future, we would see fuel cells being used as primary batteries, but we will be still in search for a better battery.vibes
